Great book for school counselors or teachers in elementary school. I read this to my 3rd and 4th grade kids to help them learn that mistakes help us learn, trying something new helps us learn, and practicing hard skills helps us learn. It was too long to read in one sitting, the kids got a little antsy. I split it into two separate lessons, and showed a model of the brain in the second lesson. Will definitely use this book again next year.

I really like this book. the only issue I have with it is the statement in it about brain growth being most important in the early years. I read this with my special needs child and the truth is for him - working on brain growth is going to be a life long project. He is literal enough to take that statement at face value and think that after a certain time frame there is no point in trying. I just whited out that portion of the text but I really wish it had not been there at all.

I have been wanting this book FOREVER. It was picked as one of our Book of the Month selections at school so copies were ordered for everyone! So why is this book so uber cool in my opinion? It teaches kids ALL about their brains but most importantly:•learning new things strengthens the brain•making mistakes is one of the best ways your brain learns and grows•you can STRETCH the part of your brain that controls your feelingsAnd much more........Don't these seem like things kids should know and understand? And shouldn't we be reinforcing these messages as they navigate their ever complicated world? Love this resource and I think it should be on EVERY teacher's shelf in America. Seriously.

This book is written more as an informative book rather than story type. If your kid is younger than 5 they may find it a bit boring. Luckily there's a couple characters within the book that bring a little bit of fun to the content. Overall, the illustrations help the kids understand those parts of the brain that are responsible for who we are. Highly recommend if you are trying to teach your child the power of the brain and how it controls everything we do throughout our lives.

The first-graders that I read to were fascinated to learn about how their brains work. When tackling some arithmetic problems, one girl said she didn't need my help because her brain "was firing!"

An excellent non-fiction book for the curious child. It contains a lot of details on lobes of the brain, functioning, and what wold happen if we didn't have one of these parts functioning! It is so full of favors, it is not a one-time reads. It's a book to be studied. It has terrific illustrations, and I plan to use it in the classroom, but I intend to pre-load some off the concepts and vocab for my students. I'm pleased with this book.

Great information done in an interesting way. The children find this scientific information interesting because of the way it is presented. This is a Growth Mindset book. The illustrations are adorable too. Our students from 1st through 3rd check this out willingly for fun.

I look forward to reading this book to my first-graders and sharing it's research with my students. This book explains the science behind how the brain works in great kid friendly terms. As a person who has studied many of the sciences for over 50 years and who became a Christian 14 months ago, I found this book to be a genuine treasure. It should be made into a movie. Although it can be fairly technical sometimes, even a layman can grasp most of the concepts. Having it laid out visually with a good narrator could make it available to a much wider audience. Having said that, I do highly recommend getting this book and working your way through it. It will be well worth your time and effort.

I am neither a scientist nor a theologian, but I loved this book. I've always subscribed to the seven literal (i.e., 24 hour) days of creation. This book opened myeyes to the intricate eeons of careful preparation measured in "God days", possibly billions of years. Some of the technical terms were a little above my head; however, the concepts were eventually explained in terms simple enough even for me. The great mass of improbably tight tolerances required to support life as we know it left me filled with awe. In the end,, the point is not how long it took God to create this earth but that He invested so much to make it what it is. Wow. Definitely worth reading.

My neurosurgeon, Stan Rouhe, gave an interview to a couple of his friends in the final days of his life as he accepted the fact that his current battle with pancreatic cancer was leading to his physical death. He did not fear death because he said he knew that God's existence was a FACT! He said that he arrived at that conclusion after he read a book by Hugh Ross that his daughter had given him. His friends posted their interview online enabling his friends to share his last thoughts and spiritual growth during his last days on Earth. I asked myself what kind of scientific proof could have convinced my friend and doctor of 40 years to make such a bold statement as "God's existence is a FACT." I went straight to Amazon and ordered this book on my kindle so that I, too, could have su ch scientific certainty of God's existence.I did not expect to be convinced. I expected to still have to depend on faith. That was not the case. I finished the book with a sense of absolute knowledge. The scientific information is arranged as an analogy of building a complex structure. It shows how complex the process was to create a planet capable of supporting advanced forms of life was. The planet had to revolve around a star of a particular size and mass, a particular distance away, with a particular age, luminosity, and radiation. Elements had to be created in specific amounts and concentrations at exactly the right times. He sticks to the sciences of the planet and galaxy with a super intelligent designer in mind. The religious portion doesn't show up until the last chapter. The "Guides to Biblical Scholarship" series aims to provide a popular presentation of major issues and developments in recent biblical scholarship. Here, Via (emeritus, Duke Divinity Sch.; The Ethics of Mark's Gospel) has written an updated version of a book of the same name by Hendrickus Boers that appeared in the series in 1979. Via examines major advances since then in the debate concerning the nature and structure of New Testament theology, especially regarding historical criticism, literary criticism, and existential interpretation. An introductory chapter discusses the contribution made by Boers's book, and Chapters 2 through 7 follow the same basic structure: Via presents a succinct overview of a significant issue (e.g., the objectivity of historical criticism, historical vs. hermeneutical structure, postmodernist interpretations) followed by a usually very brief but thorough overview of a dizzying array of contemporary scholars' contributions. At the end of each chapter, he summarizes the main issues and offers his evaluation. While constituting impressive scholarship, this book assumes too much of a general reader. About the Author
Robyn Moroney, BEc (Hons), MCom, PhD, CA, CPA, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting and Finance at Monash University. Before commencing her academic career, Robyn worked as an auditor at Arthur Young, now Ernst & Young. With over 25 years’ academic experience, Robyn has previously held positions at The University of Melbourne, The University of Auckland, The University of New South Wales and La Trobe University. As a member of the board of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, which represents the interests of accounting and fi nance academics in both countries, Robyn has taken on a number of roles including co-chairing the conference technical committee and the doctoral symposium. Her areas of research are the behavioural aspects (auditor decision-making processes) and economics of auditing.

Fiona Campbell, BCom, FCA, is an Assurance Partner with Ernst & Young in Melbourne. Fiona has been client serving in the assurance practice since 1991 and has worked on audit clients primarily in the manufacturing, consumer and industrial products industries, as well as not-for-profi t sector organisations. She has considerable experience providing professional services to Australian and foreign-controlled companies, including large publicly listed and private companies. Fiona is also responsible for assurance methodology and technology at Ernst & Young in Australia, and has been involved in designing the fi rm’s global audit methodology for the past 14 years, including ensuring compliance with both international and local auditing standards.

Jane Hamilton, BBus, MAcc, PhD, is Professor of Accounting at the Bendigo campus of the Regional School of Business, La Trobe University, and previously held academic positions at the University of Technology, Sydney. Jane has 20 years’ experience in teaching and has published the results of her auditing research in several Australian and international journals.

Tinkering Toward Utopia is a timeline of education reform meant for educators, social professionals, policymakers, and scholars. The main arguments are that educational reform takes place in incremental progress, the grammar of schooling persists, and reform initiatives should not be imposed in a top down approach but rather from within the classroom.The first chapter, "Progress or Regress," gives a historical account of educational reform from Horace Mann to the administrative progressives to the 1990's. Education was held in high regard as being responsible for the future of the society. However, the administrative progressives' belief that education could be standardized and would improve education for all had failed. There were large disparities in educational opportunities with the poor, blacks, working-class immigrants, disabled, and females suffering most from the inequities. Interestingly, even with the social ills of poverty and segregation, during the 1940's and 50's schools were fairing well; the community and parents were satisfied with their school and teachers. In the mid 1950's a new form of progress was breaking through the educational arena in a campaign for "simple justice." From the 1970's onward, people began to show disappointment in schools and in the 1980's with the publication of A Nation at Risk, people began to believe that schools and test scores needed to improve if we were to improve our society. Tyack and Cuban do not take a side of either progress or regress. However, they do state that, "The public schools, for all their faults, remain one of our most stable and effective public institutions" (pg. 38).The fourth chapter, "Why the Grammar of Schooling Persists," discusses the stability within the school system. The basic grammar of schooling has not changed. School hours, the physical space within the classroom, grades, credits, and subjects have remained the same. Although some have challenged the grammar of schooling, the initiatives have disappeared leaving a few changes but nothing insofar as to drastic change the grammar of schooling. A few innovative initiatives include the ungraded schools, departmental specialization in elementary, and teachers working in teams. All of which attempted to make positive changes to teaching and learning.The fifth chapter, "Reinventing Schooling," describes the impact of drastic initiatives in reforming education. Initiatives such as electronic pedagogy, contracting instruction, managing education, merit pay, and teaching by machine have been implemented and resisted by educators nor have they proven to work better than the public schools.Presently, with the paradigm of standardization leading assessments, curriculum, instruction, Tyack and Cuban's Tinkering Toward Utopia can help educators understand the progress that has been made within the education system. Education reform is an incremental progress, tinkering, from within the framework of the schools, not a mandated top down approach. Tyack and Cuban advocate for reforms that help teachers improve instruction from inside the classroom as opposed to a top down approach.

I used this book for a class on the social foundations of the U.S. educational system. I found it to be well-researched and informative, and it was pretty easy to read. I enjoyed reading it and learning about the different cultural factors that influenced the development of education in the U.S. On the seller's side, the book arrived on time and as advertised, so I was quite happy with it. I will be keeping the book for future reference.

Great text book! Tyack and Cuban recount the history of how the public schools were formed and the reforms that followed up until 1995 when the book was written. This book shows how public schools directly impact society as a whole, to include the politics involved with school reforms.As a bonus, the Kindle version helps education students locate and cite passages quickly and efficiently, just by looking at the notes section in your Kindle app or device, or by typing in a keyword in the search. The notes section will contain all of your highlighted passages. The only issue is that there are no pages indicated, but rather 'locations' within the book, so you will have to use APA style for referencing electronic books. It would be nice though, if all electronic books display the page numbers and even the chapter that should appear at the top of the app or Kindle device.

Having read Tinkering Toward Utopia for one of my graduate classes in administration at the GSE at Rutgers, I would summarize that the book is excellent, but a little bit dated.Tyack & Cuban present a well-done overview of the American educational system, from its beginnings in the early 20th century through the mid-1980's. Their theme, "tinkering toward utopia," is an interesting take on addressing school reform throughout the century and sheds light on the problems and pitfalls of "overpromising" and "hyperbole" that have existed--and continue to exist--in American education. Overall, the text is easy to read and is replete with well-developed examples.My only caution is that although the ideas presented continue through and are valied in modern times, the examples and data contained in the work are, for lack of a better word, dated--11 years in public education, especially with 5+ of those years overshadowed by NCLB, is a long time of increased levels of accountability that are missing in what could be "a century (and a little more) of public school reform." One would hope that a revised edition be published in the near future with a chapter or two specifically devoted to those last 5 years of the 20th century and the transition into the 21st.However, overall, the text is excellent and highly informative.

This text was for class and therefore proprietary to higher education. A great read with easy to read text that allowed excellent comprehension of the subject matter. Pedagogy and its history at its best.

David Tyack demonstrates how we as Americans believe that our schools can be a panacea of society's ills, but that this is a fallacy. What actually occurs is that change in our schools is very slow and often takes decades. In many ways, they have not changed. If you want to read a thought provoking book about American school reform, this is it!

So many ideals so little concrete. I ran my local store out of the smaller buckets of concrete I had to buy a much larger bag.

I liked the way the author's wrote about creating with concrete, but there wasn't much that I hadn't already seen and created myself.I would highly suggest this to the true beginner.
